Machu Picchu is an Inca archaeological site located in Peru at about 2 430 m a.s.l. It is the third largest archaeological site in the world after the excavations of Pompeii and Ostia Antica in 2003, more than 400 000 people have visited the ruins. The Picchu Gorge, located halfway between the Andes and the Amazon rainforest, was colonized by non-wild mountain populations from the Vilcabamba and Sacred Valley areas, in the Cusco region, and seeking expansion at their agricultural frontiers . Archaeological evidence indicates that agriculture has been practiced in the region since at least 760 BC.
