The Colosseum, originally known as the Flavian Amphitheater, located in the center of the city of Rome, is the largest amphitheater in the world; it is the most important Roman amphitheater, as well as the most imposing monument of ancient Rome that has come down to us. Inserted in 1980 in the list of World Heritage Sites by UNESCO, together with the entire historic center of Rome, in 2007 the complex, the only European monument, was also included among the New Seven Wonders of the World.
