The Mouth of Truth (Italian: Bocca della Verità [ˈbokka della veriˈta]) is a marble mask in Rome, Italy, which stands against the left wall of the portico of the Santa Maria in Cosmedin church. The legend of the mouth of truth tells us that whoever swear the false holding his hand in the mouth would be cut clean. In 1485 it tooks its present name because it is said that behind it there was an executioner who cut the fingers of those who swore falsehood inside her mouth.
